1st Annual New Mexico Photo Art Show
1st Annual New Mexico Photo Art Show

2009 brings us the first Annual New Mexico Photo Art Show, an upscale, juried exhibit held this December at the New Mexico Expo (formerly the State Fair Grounds) from December 3rd to December 23. This premier exhibit is open only to New Mexico residents. And it’s not too late to enter your fine art photography. See details below.

Leroy Perea, founder of NMPAS, always dreamed of helping New Mexico photographers. This is evident in the roll call of his professional involvement beginning 37 years ago as a scientific photographer at Sandia National Laboratories.

Throughout most of those 37 years Perea also ran a portrait studio. He became involved with the PPA, WPPI and IPSW through his studio. “That’s just a bunch of alphabet soup that means that I was in several professional photographic organizations for many years,” explains the modest founder of the ANMPAS.

Realizing early on that competitions are a fast way to improve his photography, Leroy entered as many of the photo competitions as he could back then, “though sometimes I felt like I was doing these images for the sake of getting ribbons or merit points, but never for the pure enjoyment of being a photographer.

“I always envied the fine art photographers that would put on gallery shows and the like. I didn’t realize at the time that most of them were not able to make a living doing just fine art photography so I pretty much gave up on the premise that I could quit my day job and live off my fine art pieces.”

So Leroy kept his day job, which was scientific photography, and made a good living for him and his family. But retirement renewed and enhanced his vision.

“After I retired I felt like what I would love to do with myself now, would be to give the benefit of many years in photography to those who were just starting in the craft.  So I began teaching to beginners and intermediate photographers and I found that many of them also had the desire to do gallery style photography.”

Perea had judged photography contests of various kinds for many years and for many levels of skill. “This included the New Mexico State Fair for which I had judged for the past 20 years off and on.

“I heard through the staff at the state fair that the Fine Art building at EXPONM was going to be vacant in the month of December.  I saw my chance, and without much thought, leased the building for a photographic gallery show for the residents of New Mexico.”

Drum roll please. This bold move quickly became the ANMPAS, the only statewide premier gallery that showcases only local artists.

Amy Parish, a key committee member who is currently a PPA councilor for New Mexico, and therefore somewhat officially represent the interests of the New Mexico chapter on a national level, said today, “The judges will judge for entry only based on the digital files that are submitted.  Then, there will be judging of the actual prints.

Parish continued, “There are specific guidelines for framing and presentation outlined on the ANMPAS site, so that there is fine art uniformity and professionalism amongst the displayed photographs.

“We have highly qualified judges for the jurying and print judging process. Oscar Lozoya, Pat Barrett, and Marlene Loria,” are some of the judges Parish named. “I think we are still acquiring a few more.  Glen Hohnstreitter is on our “ask” list, and we are hoping he will be able to participate in the judging process.”

The show has seven categories, and all selected prints will be prominently and elegantly displayed at the Fine Arts building at New Mexico Expo, with a grande reception this December. The show will be highly advertised in the print media as well as radio and television.

So Leroy Perea’s baby is now taking its first steps in grande proportions. “My goal is to show the people of this state that photographic art is here to stay, and that we photographers need a dedicated facility for the photographers of New Mexico, states Perea.  “When that happens I will be satisfied!”

Wonderful finds here! Also, I found something interesting I thought I would share, I wrote about it this month…

DÉCOR TIPS & QUIPS from AlphabetPIX.com

    Bringing Out Your Inner BOLD!

Bill Blass said, “Style is primarily a matter of instinct.” Decorating takes on a new meaning for each individual. Clever and chic for Janie may be yesterday’s yawn-fest for Carol. Different tastes in dècor mean different furniture, artwork and color palettes. So what is the rule of thumb for making your place zing if it’s not a certain style, pattern, or color?

Bold, baby! Bring out the Y-O-U!

Boldly say what you want to say when designing a room. Make a statement and let your personality shine through. If you go in for the palest blues to soothe and relax, add a custom zing to make it pop! Love black and white photography? Maybe even some of that ultra-hot photo alphabet wall art in black and white? Splash in some passionate pink or revved up red on the wall to make it sizzle.

No longer are walls content with neutral shades. Any color of the palette goes! Splash on muted melons or eccentric eggplants with savvy sage. Classic colors cozy up with velvety crimsons and Dijon yellows. Color is fantastically bold and beautiful! Rich textured throws, swags, rugs and runners jazz up every room, every time.

Patterns are all the rage now, too. Twists and twirls, paisleys and pearls! Did you ever in a million years think of dotting stripes and striping dots? Designers these days are pulling out all the geometrical stops. Paisley mixes with all sorts of combinations-checks, polkas, and weathered solids. Discover a new way of looking at the world around you in different shapes and designs.

Mix it all with gorgeous gilding in silver and gold. Toss in a few well-chosen accents-bold and beautiful. And with the trend of decor becoming more and more personalized, a meaningful piece of photography will make you feel right at home. Black and white as well as the historic look of sepia photography looks gorgeous in any room. Add all these ingredients together, and you’ve got yourself a decorating design that not only expresses your individual style but does so as personally and beautifully as you want it to.

Whatever you want to say while decorating, say it with your own personal sense of style. Put it out there for the world to see and don’t look back! Embrace your individuality whether your nature is “Janie jazzed” or “Carol calm”. Express yourself! When people enter your home they’ll shoot you a complementary smile, knowing it looks and feels sooooo perfectly like you. And no one can do YOU better.
